In the lead-up to an Opposition meeting in Mumbai, the prospect of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s candidacy for Prime Minister in the 2024 elections has emerged, sparking discussions within his party and among opposition members.
Members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) stirred the conversation by proposing Kejriwal’s name for the Prime Minister’s post. AAP’s Chief National Spokesperson, Priyanka Kakkar, expressed her support for Kejriwal’s nomination, highlighting his model of governance that benefits the people. However, she clarified that the final decision rests with the party and the INDIA alliance, as reported by PTI.
The remarks were made just hours before the scheduled Opposition meeting in Mumbai, where leaders are expected to discuss joint campaign strategies and resolve differences among themselves. The INDIA alliance aims to create a united front against the ruling party.
However, other leaders from the AAP were quick to issue clarifications, emphasizing that Kejriwal is not actively seeking the Prime Minister’s post. AAP leader Raghav Chadha officially stated that Kejriwal is not in the race for the position and that the party’s goal is to strengthen the INDIA alliance to address challenges like unemployment and inflation.
Party colleagues, including Atishi and Sanjay Singh, joined in denying Kejriwal’s aspirations for the Prime Minister’s role. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai acknowledged that while many AAP members support Kejriwal for the position, any final decision will be made collectively by all members of the INDIA alliance.
Rai emphasized that the AAP is already part of the alliance, and Kejriwal is a member of the bloc. The discussion around Kejriwal’s potential Prime Ministerial candidacy highlights the dynamics within the opposition and the ongoing efforts to unite against the ruling party in the upcoming elections.
