Communal Clashes Erupt in Bihar After Saraswati Idol Immersion

The police added that they have arrested 50-odd suspects in Darbhanga alone because of clashes on idol.

Communal clashes erupted in several parts of Bihar following the Saraswati idol immersion, resulting in over 40 people being injured, according to police reports cited by Hindustan Times on Saturday. The clashes were particularly intense in Darbhanga, where authorities have arrested around 50 suspects in connection with the violence.

The unrest began on Friday when a clash broke out between two communities in Darbhanga’s Bahera market. Police have lodged multiple first information reports (FIRs) against 170 named individuals and 400 unidentified persons across various police stations in the district. Senior Superintendent of Police Jagunath Jala Reddy stated that at least 53 named accused have been arrested and sent to judicial custody, with efforts underway to apprehend the remaining suspects.

Darbhanga District Magistrate Rajeev Raushan confirmed that clashes occurred during idol immersion ceremonies, but authorities intervened swiftly to restore order. The situation remains tense, with police maintaining a heightened presence to prevent further escalation.

Similar incidents were reported in Bhagalpur, Saharsa, Sitamarhi, Sheikhpura, Siwan, and Jamui, where clashes erupted during Saraswati idol immersion processions. In Bhagalpur, violence erupted after stones were allegedly thrown at a procession in the Lodipur area, resulting in injuries to about 15 people. The arrival of police personnel, including Bhagalpur City Superintendent of Police Raj, helped quell the situation.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and analyzing CCTV footage to identify perpetrators. Officials have urged the public to refrain from spreading rumors on social media platforms, emphasizing the importance of maintaining communal harmony and peace.

In response to the escalating tensions, internet services were suspended in Darbhanga district for 48 hours, effective Saturday. The decision, aimed at curbing the dissemination of inflammatory content and preventing further unrest, is slated to be lifted on Monday. Additional Chief Secretary Dr. S Siddharth issued a notification justifying the suspension, citing concerns over potential misuse of online platforms to incite violence and disrupt public order.

The clashes underscore the fragility of communal relations and the need for proactive measures to prevent such incidents. Authorities must address underlying grievances and promote dialogue between communities to foster understanding and tolerance. Additionally, robust law enforcement and swift action against instigators are essential to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.

As Bihar grapples with the aftermath of the violence, concerted efforts by local administration, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders are imperative to restore calm and prevent further escalation of tensions. It is essential to uphold the principles of peace, harmony, and coexistence to build a resilient and inclusive society.
