In preparation for the upcoming G20 Summit in New Delhi, a specialized K9 squad consisting of 69 explosive detection dogs has been strategically deployed across critical locations in the city to ensure thorough security checks. From the arrival points of foreign dignitaries at Delhi Airport to their designated hotels, each location will have two handlers accompanying the dogs to detect and prevent any potential threats.

The K9 team includes 34 explosive detection dogs that were acquired as puppies from a kennel in Hyderabad specifically for the Summit. After undergoing intensive training at the ITBP camp in Bhanu, Chandigarh, these dogs were deployed to key locations in New Delhi. Additionally, the team features 13 trained dogs sourced from the Indian Army’s Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) unit.

Comprising breeds such as Belgian Malinois, Golden Retrievers, Labradors, and Alsatians, these dogs underwent a comprehensive six-month-long training program at the ITBP camp before being assigned to their security duties. The majority of the dogs are trained in explosive detection, while others specialize in tracking and narcotics detection.

The K9 squad will be stationed round-the-clock at various critical sites, including the airport, hotels hosting dignitaries, and locations to be visited by foreign leaders. Mock drills are regularly conducted with the dogs to ensure their effectiveness in detecting suspicious items, both in vehicles and public areas.

These canines will also be stationed at prominent sites such as Rajghat, Connaught Place, and the vicinity of India Gate as part of their security assignments. With a strict diet consisting of milk, meat, rice, and vegetables, the dogs are being meticulously cared for to ensure their optimal performance during the G20 Summit.

This significant deployment of explosive detection dogs marks the Delhi Police’s most extensive acquisition of K9 resources since the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The inclusion of well-trained dogs and their handlers enhances the security measures in place for the G20 Summit, further ensuring the safety of foreign dignitaries and the general public during the event.

As the countdown to the G20 Summit continues, the specialized K9 squad’s presence serves as a testament to the comprehensive security preparations being undertaken by the authorities in New Delhi.
