aam aadmi party history info

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is a political party in India. The AAP was founded in November 2012 by Arvind Kejriwal following the 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement, popularly known as Anna Andolan. The AAP is currently the ruling party of two state governments; Delhi and Punjab. The AAP has Jhaadu (broom) as their election symbol.

The party came into existence following rift between Kejriwal and Anna Hazare during India Against corruption movement (2011), which had been demanding a Jan Lokpal Bill. Ahad wanted to keep the movement politically neutral whereas Kejriwal wanted to enter directly into politics to form government. Ultimately Arvind Kejriwal with his supporters formed the AAP in 2012.

Making its electoral debut in the 2013 Delhi Legislative Assembly election, the AAP emerged as second largest party after the BJP. The AAP formed the government with support from Congress Party in Delhi, and Kejriwal became the Chief Minister of Delhi. To ride on corruption movement wave, he resigned in just 49 days from CM post to fight 2014 Parliament election all over the India. But in Parliament election, he lost the election badly.

After President’s rule in Delhi, in the following 2015 elections, the AAP won 67 of the 70 seats in the assembly, and Kejriwal was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi again, but the AAP lost all seven parliamentary constituencies in Delhi in the 2019 Parliament election. However, the AAP again won 62 seats in 2020 Delhi assembly election. The AAP cemented its popularity outside Delhi, when It won 92 seats in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election, following which its leader Bhagwant Mann was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Punjab.

AAP National Convener is Arvind Kejriwal, and the Political Affairs Committee is the highest decision making body of the party. The current member of the PAC are Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh, Gopal Rai, Atishi Marlena, Imran Hussain, Durgesh Pathak, Raghav Chadha and Rakhi Bidlan. Pankaj Kumar Gupta (National Secretary) and Narain Dass Gupta (National Treasurer) are the ex officio members of the PAC. The party’s National Executive Committee had 34 members in 2022.
