Ramkumar Ramanathan Receives Wild Card Entry

Ramkumar had won his seventh and last doubles Challenger title in Bengaluru with compatriot Saketh Myneni, two years back.

Ramkumar Ramanathan, India’s tennis hopeful and the nation’s second-highest-ranked player, received an exciting opportunity on Saturday as he was granted a wild card entry into the singles main draw of the Bengaluru Open, scheduled to commence on February 12. This wildcard entry comes as a welcome opportunity for Ramkumar, particularly after his recent first-round exit from the ongoing Chennai ATP Challenger. The Bengaluru Open presents him with a chance to showcase his talent on home soil and potentially make a mark in the tournament.

Ramkumar’s tennis journey has been marked by notable achievements, including leading India in the recent Davis Cup tie against Pakistan. Despite his early exit in the Chennai ATP Challenger, his track record on the ATP Challenger circuit is commendable. Ramkumar has reached the singles final in ATP Challenger events on seven occasions, with his lone title victory coming in Manama, Bahrain, back in November 2021. Interestingly, Bengaluru holds a special place in his tennis career, as he clinched his seventh and most recent doubles Challenger title in the city alongside compatriot Saketh Myneni two years ago.

Expressing his gratitude for the wild card entry, Ramkumar conveyed his happiness and excitement about participating in the Bengaluru Open. He acknowledged the significance of the tournament for him personally, given the fond memories and successes he has experienced in Bengaluru throughout his career. Ramkumar expressed his appreciation to the tournament organizers for placing their trust in him and affirmed his commitment to giving his best performance on the court.

Ranked at 459 globally, Ramkumar’s presence in the Bengaluru Open adds to the excitement of the tournament and strengthens the Indian contingent. The Bengaluru Open marks his third Challenger event of the season, following his participation in the Nonthaburi event in January, where he secured entry through the qualifiers. His recent victories in two ITF M25 World Tennis Tour events in Karnataka showcase his form and readiness to compete at the professional level.

Sunil Yajaman, the Tournament Director, hailed Ramkumar as a talented player and highlighted his significant contribution to India’s recent success in the Davis Cup tie against Pakistan. Yajaman praised Ramkumar’s performance and expressed pride in having him compete in the Bengaluru Open’s main draw. The wildcard entry not only reflects Ramkumar’s merit but also enhances the Indian representation in the tournament.

In addition to Ramkumar’s wildcard entry into the singles main draw, the tournament organizers have extended wild card entries to other Indian players as well. Prajwal Dev and his partner Siddhant Banthia have received wild card entries into the doubles main draw, along with the team of Manish Sureshkumar and Sai Karteek Reddy. This decision underscores the organizers’ commitment to supporting and nurturing Indian tennis talent.

The Bengaluru Open promises to be an exciting event, with Ramkumar’s participation adding to the anticipation and enthusiasm among tennis enthusiasts. As one of India’s promising tennis stars, Ramkumar’s journey in the tournament will be closely followed by fans and observers alike. With his determination, skill, and the support of the home crowd, Ramkumar aims to make a significant impact and further elevate his status in the world of tennis.
